Clarification of the recertification requirements for an EMT who has allowed their certification to expire.  This was received from the State Office of Emergency Medical Services.

Short History:   In June of 2004, the new regulations regarding the entire EMT certification/recertification process were adopted.  They had not been updated for a number of years.

"In reference to the two year period for re-entry...there was an addendum made to the regulations in reference to the re-entry time frame (from the proposed regulations).   This document was posted and sent to all Coordinators on September 15, 2004.   The documentation states....

"Those whose New Jersey EMT-B certification has expired beyond 24 months are no longer eligible for re-entry without successfully completing the US DOT EMT-B Training Program (entire course).  Re-entry Process Grace Period:
  1. EMT-B certification candidates whose certification was expired and entered into the recertification process prior to July 1, 2004, shall be afforded the opportunity to complete the recertification process that was in effect prior to the implementation of the new regulations.
  2. EMT-B certification candidates whose certification was expired and entered into the recertification process after July 1, 2004, shall be governed by the new regulations, effective June 21, 2004.

8:40A-7.6(a) Expired Certifications

(a) The requirements for certification of a person formerly certified as an EMT-Basic who has allowed that certification to expire (that is, a person who, for whatever reason, has not completed the required number of continuing education credits necessary for recertification) shall be as follows:

  1. Successful Completion of an approved Core 13 program; and
  2. Achievement of a passing score on the NREMT-Basic Certification
Examination.

Anyone who has expired and wishes to re-enter must complete the requirements listed above.

Please keep in mind that if the candidate reaches an expiration date of two years they will have to return to a basic program.

Once the candidate has completed the core 13 program they will have one year (provided they are still within the two year time frame) to complete the entire testing process.

Testing process:
  • Exam 1
  • Exam 2
  • Exam 3

  • Core 13

  • Exam 4
  • Exam 5
  • Exam 6
